Addressing the Challenges of AI-Driven B5G Networks

The presentation explored the pressing challenges posed by AI-driven network security management in Beyond 5G (B5G) infrastructures, including scalability, dynamicity, interoperability, privacy, and security. These challenges are central to realizing the vision of ubiquitous AI-based analytics seamlessly integrated across the computing continuum—spanning Edge, Fog, Core, and Cloud environments.

To address these issues, RIGOUROUS has developed a model-driven Federated Learning framework designed for the orchestration and management of distributed network intelligence. This framework enables efficient detection and prevention of cyberattacks by coordinating FL-based agents and anomaly detectors across heterogeneous network domains.

Privacy-Preserving and Resilient Network Intelligence

A key aspect of the RIGOUROUS approach is its emphasis on privacy preservation and resilience to adversarial threats. The framework integrates Differential Privacy techniques within the training and deployment of FL agents, thereby safeguarding sensitive information while maintaining model performance. In addition, the system’s architecture supports multi-domain and multi-tenant orchestration, allowing for automated and scalable deployment of AI-based anomaly detection components.

These capabilities collectively enhance the trustworthiness, interoperability, and extensibility of the FL management system, ensuring that the network can respond dynamically and securely to evolving cyber threats.

Contributing to Europe’s Vision for Secure Digital Infrastructures

Through its research and technological developments, RIGOUROUS contributes to advancing Europe’s strategic objectives for secure, robust, and intelligent communication infrastructures. The project’s innovations in integrating Federated Learning, privacy-preserving mechanisms, and AI-driven automation represent a significant step towards the realization of trustworthy and adaptive security for B5G networks.

Participation in ICTC 2025 provided the RIGOUROUS consortium an important platform to disseminate these results, engage with the research community, and foster new collaborations aimed at strengthening the resilience and privacy of future digital ecosystems.

The RIGOUROUS project will host a workshop with its latest research at DefCamp 2025, taking place in November in Bucharest, Romania. During the event, the consortium will showcase recent advancements in AI-driven, privacy-preserving network security and demonstrate Federated Learning-based anomaly detection solutions tailored for Beyond 5G (B5G) environments. This participation will provide an opportunity to engage with the European cybersecurity community, exchange technical insights, and highlight the project’s contributions to building more resilient and trustworthy network infrastructures.

Ongoing Contributions

The team highlighted the significant contributions made by its members in recent months. This includes the development of use cases and the #RIGOUROUS architecture, as well as the integration of AI enhanced security orchestration. These contributions are crucial to the project’s success and will ultimately lead to the development of more reliable and robust automated SOAR in 6G.

Pilot Execution Planning

The team also discussed the upcoming execution of the project’s pilots. These pilots will be used to evaluate the performance of the developed security solutions in real-world settings. The team carefully planned the execution of the pilots, ensuring that they will provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of the developed solutions.

Project KPI Monitoring

The team closely monitored the project’s KPIs, which track the project’s progress towards its goals from a technical, administrative and dissemination perspectives. The team reviewed the latest KPI data and identified areas where improvements can be made, with focus on liaison with other projects, and the dissemination goals for 2024.

Overall, the technical meeting was a productive event that helped the RIGOUROURS team stay on track and make progress towards its goals.

The program also contained strong involvement from the public sector and industry aimed at deepening the understanding, the necessary dialog, and actions needed to accelerate the adoption and deployment of IoT. Selected well-known Chairs, who can be contacted directly, participated in sessions on issues of regional and global importance and to seek prominent and knowledgeable speakers and panelists for the program.

Earlier this month we had our first plenary meeting in Aveiro, Portugal. The meeting was a two-day event that started on May 30, with the most significant outcomes reported in previous news.

Project Highlights

The DevSecOps loop is alive and well, with design and specification work to bring this SOAR approach into 6G and the telco world. These works will allow us to tackle AI-driven anomaly detection, Decision Composition and mitigation, Multi-domain model-based automated security orchestration, and trust management in a more human-centric way, following a generalized “human in the loop” approach that brings together intelligent actions and automation without disregarding the need for the humans to remain informed, consenting, and in control of the services and overarching management and orchestration systems.

We are also working tirelessly to bolster Privacy as part of the human-centric approach, researching and experimenting with new ideas, which we hope to detail further in the following newsletters and scientific publications.

There is tremendous work being carried out by the RIGOUROUS partners, especially from OULO, that is heavily investing towards researching Moving Target Defense (MTD) in O-RAN and several AI/ML-powered approaches to intrusion/anomaly detection that improve the defenses in different aspects of cybersecurity and scenarios, from Industrial IoT to general B5G networks. These innovations may define the course towards 6G. Be sure to track our publications section; such quality work will undoubtedly be published in high-impact peer-reviewed venues.

Project Highlights

The EU-funded RIGOUROUS project has officially commenced, marking a significant milestone in Europe’s pursuit of robust security and trust for the next-generation 6G wireless ecosystem. This ambitious initiative brings together a consortium of leading research institutions and industry partners from across the continent, united by a common goal: to establish a comprehensive framework that safeguards the security, privacy, and integrity of 6G networks and services.

At the heart of the RIGOUROUS project lies the development of a novel smart service framework that seamlessly integrates machine learning (ML) and cybersecurity capabilities. This transformative framework will continuously monitor and assess the security posture of 6G systems, proactively identifying and mitigating potential breaches before they can cause harm, using a SOAR approach.

The RIGOUROUS project represents a critical step towards ensuring the resilience of 6G against evolving cyber threats. By harnessing the power of ML and AI, we are creating a dynamic DevSecOps and DevPrivOps aligned security solution that can adapt to the ever-changing threat landscape and safeguard the trust and reliability of future 6G networks.

The project’s scope extends beyond security to encompass privacy and trust as well. Researchers will explore innovative techniques to embed privacy-preserving mechanisms into 6G architectures, ensuring that user data is protected and respected. Additionally, they will develop methods for establishing and maintaining trust in the use of future networks, including an human factor.

As RIGOUROUS progresses, it will collaborate closely with industry partners to validate and integrate its security framework into real-world 6G pilots. This practical application will ensure that the project’s advancements directly benefit the development and deployment of secure and trustworthy 6G networks across Europe.

I’m thrilled to share an update about our exciting new project. To ensure a strong start, we recently held a Kick-Off Meeting in Murcia (Jan. 10 and 11). Let me give you a quick rundown of what went down.

The meeting kicked off with introductions and a warm welcome to all team members. We expressed our gratitude for their participation and emphasized the importance of their roles in our project’s success.
Next, we provided a concise overview of the project, including its background, goals, and desired outcomes. We wanted everyone to understand the purpose and context behind our work.
We then discussed the roles and responsibilities of each team member, clarifying how collaboration and communication would be facilitated throughout the project. This ensured everyone knew their part in the team’s collective effort.

Moving on, we outlined the specific deliverables we need to produce and set expectations for quality standards and deadlines. It was important for everyone to be on the same page regarding what we’re aiming for and when it needs to be accomplished.
The project plan and timeline were presented next, highlighting the major phases, tasks, and key milestones. This visual roadmap provided a clear path forward and helped instill a sense of purpose and determination in the team.

Finally, we discussed the available resources (i.e., assets) and support to empower our team members. We identified the tools and technologies that will aid us in achieving our goals efficiently.
As we wrapped up the meeting, a contagious excitement filled the room. Our consortium left with a clear understanding of their roles, the project’s objectives, and the roadmap ahead.
